Overview

What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique is a profoundly simple and gentle, yet powerful healing tool...

... that taps into our body's innate ability to self-regulate and initiate a healing process thereby allowing for patterns of pain, limitation and anxiety to shift.

Developed and refined over many years in Australia by Thomas Bowen, Bowen Therapy is a soft connective-tissue hands-on technique which consists of rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerve endings within the fascial web performed in a specific sequence on specific points of the body separated by short periods of rest.

These *rolling* impulses reach the brain via sensory receptors prompting an activated or under-activated nervous system to switch into parasympathetic state, into the Goldi Lock healing zone where it's not too hot, and not too cold, but where conditions are just right for healing.

An Invitation to Experience

𖦹 Relief from Pain

𖦹 Funtional and Postural Alignment

𖦹 Restoration of Mobility

𖦹 A Calmer Nervous System

𖦹 Emotional and Energetic Shifts

Another Way...

...to describe the mechanism of Bowen Therapy is that we are working through the fascia and muscles to influence the nerves within them. And thereby, changing the way the brain instructs the muscles in their tension, and relieving the body's reactive holding patterns that underlie pain, stress, anxiety and dis-ease.

Bowen Therapy Often Helps When Everything Else Has Failed. It can help alleviate or resolve

Chronic and Acute Pain   Anxiety

Neurological Challenges  Musculoskeletal limitations

Migraines and headaches   Fibromyalgia

TMJ-related issues   Traumatic injuries

Respiratory problems   Digestive issues

Carpal tunnel syndrome   Postural alignment

   Frozen shoulder   Sciatica

Who can benefit from Bowen Therapy?

The short answer is: EVERYONE

𖦹From highly trained athletes to pregnant women, newborn babies, children, the elderly...

𖦹Anyone experiencing pain, injuries, stress, movement limitations, musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, sensory, structural and/or systemic imbalances.

𖦹As part of on-going self-care.

𖦹Children usually enjoy to receive the interesting little rolling moves over points on their bodies and are often quite receptive to Bowen Therapy. Bowen Therapy can be very helpful with bed wetting and treating colics.

Because of it's calming and balancing effects on the autonomic nervous system, children and adults on the autism spectrum can benefit from Bowen Therapy. Extensive records of case studies done over a few years in a Bowen Therapy Clinic in Cardiff on hundreds of children *diagnosed* with Autism, Aspergers and ADHD documented better sleep, less restlessness, less anger outburst, more of a sense of well-being.

What happens during a Bowen Session?

The first session begins with a conversation so I can learn what is going on for you - where you are experiencing pain and challenges and what you would like to address. I will make sure all your questions are answered and that you are feeling comfortable and ready to then transition onto the table. This is where the gentle 'Bowen Moves' begin - typically over certain muscles and tendons on the back along the spine, head and legs. However, the sequence and number of rolling movements applied is unique to each person and can also happen in a sitting position. A set of Bowen Moves is followed by a 2-5 minute pause to give your nervous system time and space to process and respond to the subtle stimuli your body received. This is a time for you to just be and relax on the table....until more 'Bowen Moves' follow.

After typically 20 - 40 minutes the set of movements are complete. I will likely encourage you to walk around a bit to sense into your body as you are moving. I may even suggest you take a walk now that your body is re-organizing to support the new alignment and recommend to refrain from strenuous activites and hot/cold therapy in the following days. Drinking enough water before and right after and in the days following the session means you are keeping your fascia hydrated and this will amplify the effect of the 'Bowen Moves'.

What imbalances often respond favourably to Bowen Therapy?

Musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, sensory, structural, systemic imbalances.

Because Bowen Therapy works holistically by restoring balance via resetting the autonomic nervous system (which controls almost all of our bodily function, physical and emotional states) the spectrum of physical and emotional challenges that can respond favourably to Bowen Therapy is vast.  Due to our body's healing intelligence that is contacted by the purposeful Bowen moves and applied with attunement by the practitioner, the body can re-organize to restore structure and function, as it is able.

As a Bowen Technique practitioner, I consider my offering to be very simple. It does not involve any forcing or fixing. It is wrapped in gentle stimuli offered by my hands to your nervous system, handing the information over to you, then letting  your body‘s inherent wisdom do the rest.

How much does Bowen Therapy cost?

The costs for both, an initial and subsequent Bowen Therapy sessions is $100. This includes travel time. Typically, sessions are 30 to 60 minutes.

For some people, issues improve or resolve within one session. For other people, especially with chronic and systemic issues, the benefits of Bowen Therapy often unfold over several sessions. There is always a bit of an unknown because of how uniquely each person responds and processes the "Bowen Moves".

Most people find Bowen Therapy Sessions pleasant and calming. Afterwards most people feel relaxed yet energised and alert.

Feeling tired or some soreness the day after is common for some people as their body adjusts and is moving through a healing process.

Applying the 'Bowen Moves' truly is an intuitive art that...

...recognizes the inticracy, delicacy and aliveness of the largest sensory organ in our body - the fascia. This excerpt from the documentary THESE TWO HANDS based on Tom Bowen and his legacy sheds light on what we are learning about the mechanisms that underlie Bowen Therapy - what Tom Bowen seemingly felt, but was not always able to explain - offering answers to why Bowen Therapy is so valuable and effective.

𖦹 Personal Reflections on Bowen Therapy

Our body is an amazing constantly self-organizing, biotensegral structure where change is not just local. Our planes of experience are intimately intertwined with each other. For example, our postural habits re-enforce our emotions and the way we feel re-enforces our posture. Our bodily systems are also intimately interconnected, with each other and with our feeling, mental and physical state. For example, if our nervous system is in a stress response, our immune system and digestion is affected. Physically we may experience tightness in the chest and shallow breathing with racing thoughts and a critical part in us in high gear.

Bowen Therapy reverberates into all realms of experience - physical, chemical, emotional, energetical and mental - when the charged state of the tissues is deactivated through the body's shift into the parasympathetic nervous system, changes are global.
